MBBS doctors will be registered, Centre launches National Medical Register portal, know why it is special

Bhupendra Sharma, New Delhi: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday inaugurated the National Medical Register (NMR) portal for the registration of all MBBS doctors. On this occasion, the Union Health Minister said that the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Health Authority have jointly developed this portal. This will be a comprehensive and important database for all allopathic (MBBS) registered doctors in India. he/she said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is to make India digitally strong. This can happen only when the health ecosystem is also digitally strong.

JP Nadda launched the portal, know what he/she said

JP Nadda said that the National Health Register is a much-awaited step in this direction, which will strengthen the digital healthcare ecosystem and ensure quality healthcare for the people of India. he/she further said that the National Medical Register will be upgraded with continuous improvement in the registration process on the portal. Union Ministers of State for Health Anupriya Patel and Prataprao Jadhav were also present on the occasion. The National Medical Register is required under Section 31 of the NMC Act 2019.

What will be the benefit of NMR

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra said that till now there was a lack of such comprehensive data. It could present a detailed and holistic picture of aspects such as the total number of doctors in the country, the number and details of doctors who left the country, lost their license to practice or lost their lives. The launch of NMR will ensure the provision of data of more than 13 lakh doctors. NMR has been made a part of the Healthcare Professional Registry under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which will contain complete details of medical professionals.

Doctors will get a unique ID

All the doctors of the country will get a unique ID. National Medical Register (NMR) has been implemented on the lines of One Nation One Registration. With this, the doctor will be registered on NMR as soon as he/she passes MBBS and this will eliminate the possibility of any kind of confusion from registration in different states. Now the government is moving towards starting a similar register for paramedics and other healthcare professionals as well. We are planning to create a huge digital health ecosystem and creating a digital registry of doctors is an important pillar of this ecosystem.

Now Indian dress code in convocation ceremony

Now the Indian dress code will be applicable in the convocation of the Central Government’s medical teaching institutes related to medical education including AIIMS. The Union Health Ministry has issued guidelines in this regard and said that in the states where AIIMS, central institutes of national importance INIs are located, an appropriate Indian dress code will have to be designed based on the local traditions of that state. Till now, during the convocation in medical institutes, students wear black clothes (black robe) and cap.

Why was this decision taken on the dress

The ministry has said that the current practice is a ‘colonial legacy’, which needs to be changed. This dress originated in Europe in the Middle Ages and was introduced by the British in all their colonies. In such a situation, the ministry has decided that various institutions of the ministry, including AIIMS / INI, providing medical education, will design an appropriate Indian dress code for the convocation of their institute based on the local traditions of the state in which the institute is located. The proposal that the institute will send to the ministry regarding the dress code will be sent for approval to the Union Health Secretary. After his/her approval, the new dress code will come into force.
