The film ‘Devdas’ is considered a milestone in the careers of Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. Released in the year 2002, this film of Sanjay Leela Bhansali won 5 National and 11 Filmfare Awards that year. The film also featured Jackie Shroff, who played the role of Chunnilal, while Shahrukh Khan played the role of Devdas. But Manoj Bajpayee wanted to play the role of Devdas. When Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered him/her this film, he/she rejected it for this reason. In an interview given to Sushant Sinha, when Manoj Bajpayee was asked if he/she regrets rejecting a film, he/she took the name of Devdas and told the whole story. Manoj Bajpayee told that he/she was offered the role of Chunnilal in the film, which was later played by Jackie Shroff.

Manoj Bajpayee said, ‘Yes, I was offered Jackie Shroff’s role in ‘Devdas’, but I refused immediately. I told Sanjay, ‘Sanjay, friend, I always wanted to do Devdas. That film became a superhit, but I am very sad that it slipped out of my hands. I wanted to play the character of Devdas since my theater days. Ever since I saw Dilip Kumar’s film and read the book, I wanted to play this character. But I never felt bad.’
