Maharashtra Elections 2024: Why was Uddhav Thackeray’s bag searched? Election Commission gave clarification

New Delhi: The Election Commission has given clarification on two cases of searching the bag of former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray. According to sources, Election Commission officials said that all SOPs were followed to create a level playing environment for all before the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Uddhav Thackeray’s bag was checked by election officials when he/she reached Yavatmal on Monday for Maharashtra Assembly election campaign. conducted the search, after the video of which surfaced, a war of words broke out between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray’s bag was searched again in Latur on Tuesday. his/her son Aditya Thackeray claimed this and shared a video on social media platform X.

What did the Election Commission say on the whole matter?

Election Commission sources said that before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the same rules are applicable for all the candidates. Therefore a search was conducted. The sources clarified that ‘this is a normal process and is done under the model code of conduct.’

Uddhav Thackeray got angry

Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray had said on Monday that when he/she reached Yavatmal to campaign for the Maharashtra Assembly elections to be held on November 20, government officials checked his/her bag. The former Chief Minister asked whether the election officials would also check the luggage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders? Thackeray had informed about this alleged incident while addressing a public meeting organized in support of Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Sanjay Derkar in Wani, Yavatmal. There was a political uproar after this incident, after which the Election Commission had to give clarification.
