Excerpts from our conversation with him/her on the sets of Descendants:
Even in today’s era, the boy is considered as the heir of the house to carry forward the lineage. What do you think about this?
In my opinion, ability trumps legacy, whether it’s running a business empire or winning a life’s fight. There should be merit and not lineage. Where boys and girls are progressing equally, in fact girls are ahead of boys in many fields, it is simply foolish to carry this thinking. The successor should be selected on the basis of merit. Not just thinking that it is a boy. If the reins of the house go into the hands of an unqualified person, he/she will only ruin it. To decide things on the basis of son’s attachment is only to ruin your home.
How did Praveen Kumar get the role of ‘Bheem’ in ‘Mahabharata’, Puneet Issar who became ‘Duryodhana’ told stories
Now, being popular with things like reels, many types of people are coming into the film industry. What to say about it?
Again it comes down to merit here. You will enter through some means, but if you do not have the ability, then you will not be able to move forward. Many children enter the industry because their parents are in the film industry, but only those who have the ability get a chance. Take director Yash Chopra only. his/her son Aditya Chopra has taken his/her empire to where it deserves to be.
In today’s era when OTT has come and stories are getting connected with reality. In such a situation, will people like a story like Vansh?
There are all kinds of audiences. One likes one thing, the other something else. I think if the story is right, then the audience will stay. It has comedy as well as emotions as well as a message for the society. Since this story deals with the boy vs girl issue which happens in every household, it is obvious that people will like it. Be it the platform, if the story is good, everyone will stay to watch.
It’s been 30 years but people still think of me as Duryodhana: Puneet Issar
Do you enjoy working in serials or films more?
The job of the artist is to give the performance and live the character. Be it OTT, film or serial, your job is to give your best performance. By the way, this is also the golden time of our industry. In today’s era, many avenues of work have opened up. OTT has come, there are regional films, new serials are coming… I have to act, I will do it wherever I get a chance.

You play the role of a strict father in the show. What kind of person are you in real life?
My character is that of Bhanupratap, the head of the family, who is a very positive personality. he/she carries the weight of an entire business empire on his/her shoulders and becomes highly successful. he/she lives life on his/her own terms with modern values while remaining deeply connected to his/her cultural roots. he/she has a keen interest in the Bhagavad Gita, which he/she sees not only as a religious text, but as a manual for living. To be honest, I am somewhat similar in real life as well. I feel a deep connection with this character. This is the reason why I am having a lot of fun shooting in it. Its story matches with the story of every household, so people will be able to easily identify themselves with them.

How did you prepare for your role in ‘Vanshj’?
My character matches my personality and voice and I believe I am a natural fit for the role. The inspiration to play the role of Bhanu Pratap came from my father, who was reticent and a workaholic. Like my father, Bhanupratap is also a character with similar qualities, which made it easy for me to prepare for the role. I just had to copy my father’s style, way of talking and personality. I have incorporated these things in my performance. My character ensures that the business empire is inherited by the right person in the family.
