This revolution has happened of LPG (cooking gas). For which a record 17 crore new connections have been given in the last 9 years. With this, the number of LPG consumers in the country has doubled to 31.26 crore. Now clean fuel is being used in lakhs of families of the country.
Number of consumers reached 31 crore
Official data released today said that the number of active domestic LPG consumers has increased from 14.52 crore in April 2014 to 31.36 crore in March 2023. This significant increase in the number of subscribers is mainly due to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Due to this scheme, LPG coverage has increased from 62 percent in 2016 to 104.1 percent in 2022.
LPG connection is now available on demand
There was a time when one had to wait for new LPG connection, LPG cylinder was available in seven to ten days. At the same time, LPG connection is available when needed and in most places the cylinder also arrives within a day. Government vendors have also launched five kg cylinders for those consumers whose requirement is less or purchasing capacity is weak, which is additional to the conventional 14.2 kg cylinder.
Ujjwala scheme was started in 2016
PMUY was launched on May 1, 2016 with the target of providing free cooking gas connection to every poor household and the number of connections released under the scheme has reached 9.58 crore by January 30, 2023. To bring the remaining households under PMUY, Ujjwala 2.0 was launched on August 10, 2021, with a target of providing an additional one crore LPG connections. This target was achieved on January 31, 2022, and in view of the large number of applications, the government decided to give 60 lakh more connections under it.
