Lok Sabha Election Result: BJP suffers huge loss on SC-ST seats compared to 2019, Congress gains 23 seats


New Delhi: The math of vote share in elections is slightly different from seats. In the last Lok Sabha elections, BJP had secured a total of 37.7% votes, while Congress had got 19.66% votes. However, this time BJP has not only lost seats in Hindi belt states like UP, but its vote percentage has also declined. Last time BJP’s vote share in the state with 80 seats was 49.8%, but in these elections BJP captured only 41.58% vote share. In the 2019 elections for 40 seats of Bihar, BJP had got 23.58% vote share, but this time it has got 20% vote share. In the last election, there were 12 such states where BJP got more than 50% vote share. These included Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Delhi.

BJP has got 45.58% votes in Odisha, however, this time BJP has forced BJD to shrink to single digit (2) in terms of seats. However, BJP’s vote share has decreased slightly in Himachal Pradesh, this time BJP has got 56.47% vote share, whereas last time it was 69.11%. Something similar has been seen in Haryana as well. In Haryana, BJP had got 58.02% vote share in the last election which has become 46.37% this time, while in Gujarat, which is considered the laboratory of Hindutva, there has also been a slight decrease in vote percentage. In the last election, BJP had got 62.21% votes, whereas this time BJP has got 61.882% votes there, whereas in Rajasthan, last time BJP’s vote share was 58.47%, which is 58.47% this time. However, this time BJP’s vote share has also increased along with seats in Madhya Pradesh. Last time BJP had secured 58% votes here, whereas this time it has got 59.9% votes. BJP may not have won any seat in Tamil Nadu, but its vote share has increased by more than 10%.

There are 412 general seats in Lok Sabha, 84 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and 47 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes. This time, if we talk about reserved seats, BJP has become the largest party in the total 84 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes. However, it has also suffered a big loss. This time the party has won only 28 parliamentary constituencies out of 84. After this, candidates of other parties have won 35 seats. Congress has won 20 and AAP has won one seat. BJP has captured most of the 47 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes, but it has suffered a loss here too. The party has won 24 out of 47 seats, which is seven less than last time. After this, Congress has got 13 and others have got 10 seats.

Where did Congress benefit?

The states where Congress secured more than 40% vote share in 2019 included Goa, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Punjab. In this election, 40.10% votes were received in Telangana, whereas in the last election it got only 29.48% votes, while in Haryana also Congress got 43.74% votes, whereas last time it got 28.51% votes. In Rajasthan, Congress got 37.91% votes, whereas in the last election this figure was only 34.24%. On the other hand, this time Congress’s performance in UP is better according to the seats and the party has got 9.56% votes in the state, whereas in the last election Congress had 6.31% vote share. However, the party’s vote share in Punjab has decreased compared to the previous year. In 2019, the party had 40.12% vote share, whereas this time it remained 23.30%.
