New Delhi : Cyclone Fengal is going to hit Puducherry today. Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu is experiencing rough seas and strong winds as Cyclone Fengal approaches. The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday in all schools and colleges in the four districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur on Saturday. The deep depression over the south-west Bay of Bengal had transformed into a cyclone on Friday afternoon. This information was given by the Meteorological Department. Cyclone ‘Fengal’, also spelled ‘Fenjal’, is likely to make landfall near Puducherry this afternoon. During this period the wind speed can be up to 90 km per hour.

There will be heavy rain in these areas

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at one or two places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry for November 30. Apart from this, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal region.

Cyclonic storm Fengal lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 11.8 degrees north and longitude 81.7 degrees east, about 210 km south-east of Chennai. It will move west-northwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm during the afternoon of 30 November. Wind speed will range from 70-80 kmph to 90 kmph.

What is the weather department saying?

In the bulletin issued here by the IMD-regional meteorological centre, it has been said that in the morning the deep pressure area over the south-west Bay of Bengal has moved towards north-northwest and intensified into Cyclone Fengal. It said, it may move towards west-northwest as a cyclone. It may cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry. By the afternoon of November 30, wind speed may range from 70-80 kmph to 90 kmph.

What will be the impact on other states?

According to IMD forecast, Cyclone Fangal is likely to cause heavy rainfall, strong winds and floods in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Authorities have urged people living in low-lying and coastal areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories. Red alert has been issued across Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, IMD has issued an advisory for the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, in which they have been urged to avoid going into the sea till November 30.

Anand Das, head of IEMD’s cyclone division, said a red alert has been issued in view of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and interior Karnataka.
