What did the Kolkata High Court say?

The alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in a seminar hall of a state government hospital has triggered protests across the country. On August 9, the doctor’s body was found with severe injuries in the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department. The next day, the Kolkata police arrested a civic volunteer in the case. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which began its investigation from August 14. The High Court had ordered the probe to be handed over to the CBI while hearing several petitions, including one filed by the victim’s parents. The High Court on August 16 said that the mob violence at the hospital was a complete failure of the state government. The court ordered the police and the hospital administration to file an affidavit about the situation there. The High Court said it was difficult to believe that the police intelligence agency was not aware of the gathering of 7,000 people, while the state counsel told the court that such a large number of people had gathered at the hospital in the early hours of Thursday.
