Like Indian Railways, car owners can also get a monthly pass, know where it will be used

New Delhi: Just like the railways issues monthly (MST) passes to its daily commuters, similarly, in the future, such monthly or annual passes can also be issued to car owners for using toll roads. While this will reduce incidents of toll theft, it will also increase the government treasury. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday at the International Workshop on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) held in Delhi.

Monthly pass will be made for car owners

Union Minister Gadkari said that there is a plan to issue monthly and annual passes to car owners. Secretary Anurag Jain and NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav thought about this. But this will bring money and also end the hassle. The Transport Minister’s statement about issuing monthly passes to car owners is being seen as a positive thing in the coming times. In which such a system can be started at toll nakas. However, such monthly passes are still issued at some places in the country. But this monthly pass is only for the population living around toll nakas. Such passes are issued after taking some money from them after ensuring their identity through their ID.

In the satellite based toll collection system, the department is initially working on a hybrid model. In which two lanes of the toll plaza will be kept for vehicles paying satellite based toll and the rest for vehicles with the current system Fastag. Then as this GNSS based electronic toll collection increases, gradually all other lanes of the toll plaza will also be made satellite lanes. Experts from many countries also came to the workshop.

The purpose was to find out how satellite-based toll can be collected from vehicles in India without stopping them at toll booths. What other best practices are there in the world so that people of India can use toll roads by paying toll without any hassle. Union Ministers of State Harsh Malhotra and Ajay Tamta were also present at the workshop.
