New Delhi: Dozens of people, including several Indian workers, have died in a fire at a building in Kuwait City. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday expressed deep grief over the tragic incident. Jaishankar posted on Twitter, “Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. Reportedly more than 40 people have died and more than 50 are hospitalised. Our Ambassador has visited the site. We await further information.” he/she further said, “Deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Wishing the injured a speedy and full recovery. Our Embassy will provide full assistance to all those involved in this regard.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about the Kuwait fire. he/she said, ‘The fire incident in Kuwait city is sad. My condolences are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover as soon as possible. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is closely monitoring the situation and working with the authorities there to assist the affected.

The Embassy has confirmed that Indian labourers were among those killed. It said, ‘All concerned are requested to connect with the helpline for updates. The Embassy is committed to provide all possible assistance.’

Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Health Ministry also issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon. It said, ‘The Ministry of Health has taken 43 people to the hospital in the incident of fire in a building in Mangaf, out of which 4 were found dead.’

Officials said that the fire broke out in the kitchen of a six-storey building located in the Mangaf area of ​​​​Kuwait’s southern Ahmadi governorate in the early hours of Wednesday. It is being told that about 160 people lived in the building, who are employees of the same company. It is being told that many of the workers living there were Indians.

Indians constitute 21 percent (10 lakh) of Kuwait’s total population and 30 percent (about 9 lakh) of the workforce. Kuwaiti Home Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah has ordered the police to arrest the owner of the Mangaf building, the building’s watchman and the owner of the company responsible for the workers until the investigation of criminal evidence personnel at the scene is completed, the Kuwait Times reported. After visiting the scene, the minister said in a statement, “What happened today is the result of the greed of the company and building owners.”
