Kriti Sanon Interview: Where I felt I was not given equal status, I took a step back

Actress Kriti Sanon, who debuted in Bollywood with the film ‘Heropanti’ in 2014, is in the news these days for the film ‘Do Patti’. In a special conversation with presswire18 Times, Kriti told that she raises her voice when she is not given equal status on the set. Or she herself retreats.

Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon will soon be seen in the film ‘Do Patti’. he/she has played a double role in this film. In a conversation with us, he/she told that the idea of doing business came to him/her during the lockdown. That is why now she is trying her hand in the world of production also. Know what else he/she said. Apart from completing a decade in acting this year, you have also entered business and film production. How did the idea of trying your hand in these different fields come about?
It is not that it came to my mind that after so many years of acting, I should do something else. Sometimes we feel a sudden connection towards something. Like the idea of business came to my mind during the lockdown. I wonder why in my childhood, when someone asked what I wanted to become when I grow up, the answer was always the same! We can do a lot, we can become a lot.

– Apart from the double role in the film ‘Do Patti’, was the same thinking behind playing the role of co-producer?
I was actually in a phase where I wanted to be more involved creatively in the film rather than just being an actor. I realized this when I was doing ‘Mimi’. I was so attached to that film emotionally and in many ways that I wanted to be a part of every aspect of it. Then I decided to become a producer. Secondly, very rarely do you get such a script in which you get to perform at such a deep and intense level, so I was also searching for such a role which I was not able to find.

‘Tears came to my eyes’
I like Kanika’s (writer and co-producer Kanika Dhillon) writing very much, so I told her that I want to produce something. Do you have anything I can fit in? So he/she said, do you have anything in mind? So I told her an issue I wanted to work on, while Kanika had a very interesting twin sisters story. Then Kanika combined my issue and the story of her twin sisters so beautifully that I had tears in my eyes after listening to the story and I got involved in this film in a triple role.

According to Kanika, when women come together they do wonders. What is your opinion on this? How do you think women together empower each other?
I completely agree with Kanika. I believe that what you see at home, what you see your mother doing, forms your personality. I always saw that both my mom and dad worked. Both take decisions together. It was not that my mother was in any way inferior to my dad at home. At the same time, my dad also used to apply oil to my hair.

I believe that what you see at home, what you see your mother doing, forms your personality.

‘Gender roles were not defined in my house’
Mother used to cook and father used to make tea, so in my house that gender role was not defined and when you see that equality in your house, your thinking becomes the same. This similarity is normal for you. In such a situation, you see inequality at the exit. Even if it is on the set, where we see how many women are not treated equal to men, you are not okay with this. We don’t find it right and it becomes your responsibility to make it OK. In such a situation, when you go a step ahead, like being a producer yourself or being on a set where you have some authority, then it becomes your responsibility to bring equality there. For me, that is the only way to move forward.

– You have worked in so many films. Did you feel any change because of women being in powerful positions in this film?
To be honest, there must be only one or two sets where I have not received equality in terms of treatment. Elsewhere, I have not felt this so much but wherever I have felt that as a woman my value has not been corrected or I have not been given the equal status I should have, I have either raised my voice or Have taken back your steps. Didn’t tolerate it, because after a point you realize that first of all you have to respect yourself. If you are not respecting yourself then you cannot expect that respect from others. Therefore, I have taken the stand where I feel.

Wherever I felt that my value as a woman has not been upheld, I have raised my voice or stepped back.

– You are playing a double role for the first time in the film and both these roles are more challenging than each other. What trick did you adopt to adapt to both these personalities at the same time? The most important thing for me was to understand these two personalities and how can I separate them from each other because they are sisters. It is not that they were separated in childhood and met later. They have lived in the same house, with the same family, they have had the same upbringing, yet what is the difference between them? I had to find that and there is a difference. Like, I and my sister are also different, we both have very different reactions in the same situation. he/she gets very angry, I don’t get it so I caught hold of these things. his/her behavior and expression changed accordingly. There is enmity between these sisters, why is that? It was difficult to understand this psychology, but that was the fun of it.
