Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: IMA announces nationwide hunger strike, doctors will fast from morning till evening on October 15

New Delhi: The doctor is on hunger strike for justice in the case of murder and rape of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The strike continued for the ninth day today and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide hunger strike. IMA has announced a hunger strike on Tuesday, October 15 in support of the doctors sitting on strike in West Bengal to get justice.

IMA made a special appeal to the government

IMA said that across the country, the IMA Junior Doctors Network (JDN) will go on a hunger strike from 6 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. Along with this, IMA has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to accept their demands and said that the young doctors of Kolkata are fighting to the death for their legitimate demands. Today is the ninth day of their strike. Three of them have been admitted to hospital. This movement has the support of the people.

The condition of three doctors deteriorated

Protests by junior doctors continue in West Bengal. The protest started after the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protesting doctors are adamant on several demands including justice, workplace safety and removal of the Health Secretary. In support of their demands, many doctors in Kolkata and Siliguri are sitting on an indefinite hunger strike. Three doctors have been admitted to hospital after their condition deteriorated due to the hunger strike.

The doctors who are on hunger strike say that their condition is worsening, but the state government is not paying attention to their demands. A leader of the Junior Doctors Forum said that the condition (of the hunger strikers) is getting worse, but the state administration remains indifferent. Meanwhile, a group of alumni of RG Kar Hospital has also sat on a symbolic fast of 12 hours to show solidarity with the doctors who are on hunger strike.
