Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Hearing in Supreme Court today, know how far the investigation reached

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear today the rape and murder case of a junior resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of this matter. According to the cause list published on the Supreme Court website, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. A three-judge bench headed by Chandrachud will resume hearing the suo motu case on September 30.

Last week, the bench had adjourned the hearing scheduled for September 27 on the request of the West Bengal government. Justice J.B. in the bench. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra are also included. In the last hearing, the apex court had expressed concern over the state government’s order not to employ women doctors at night.

After this, the West Bengal government assured the Supreme Court that such a condition would not be imposed, which would be contrary to the basic constitutional principle of gender equality. Furthermore, she had reiterated that no adverse or punitive action should be taken against doctors returning to work.

What did the Supreme Court say?

During the hearing, the top court observed that the objective of the CBI investigation is to uncover the ‘complete truth’ and ‘new truth’ of the incident of murder and rape. After the latest status report of CBI, a bench headed by CJI Chandrachud said, ‘Disclosing today about what the CBI is doing will affect the direction of the investigation. The further investigation by CBI is aimed at uncovering the whole truth and new facts. You all know that apart from the main accused, the SHO has also been arrested. he/she is in CBI custody and important facts will come to light during the investigation.

‘…the effort may divert the objective of the investigation’

The Supreme Court stressed that adequate time should be given to the central investigating agency and any attempt to close the investigation in a timely manner may defeat the purpose of the investigation. A bench headed by the CJI said, ‘We are all interested in ensuring proper investigation to reach the ultimate truth, which is being conducted by the CBI.’
