Kolkata doctor case: Mamata government accused of not cooperating with CISF, central government approaches Supreme Court


New Delhi: The uproar over the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital does not seem to stop. Meanwhile, the Center on Tuesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court and made a big allegation against the West Bengal government. The Center, while petitioning the Supreme Court, said that the Mamta Banerjee government is not cooperating in providing equipment to the CISF deployed for security at RG Kar Hospital. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been entrusted with the responsibility of security of this hospital in Kolkata. In such a situation, the Supreme Court has raised questions about not getting cooperation from the state government.

Centre’s petition in Supreme Court

Filing a petition in the Supreme Court, the Center has described the alleged non-cooperation of the Trinamool Congress government of Bengal as a symptom of systemic flaws. The Union Home Ministry has requested to direct the West Bengal officials to fully cooperate with CISF. During the hearing on August 20, the Supreme Court had termed the incident of rape and murder of the doctor in RG Kar Hospital as horrific.

The court had given several directions, including the formation of a 10-member National Task Force (NTF) to prepare a protocol to ensure the safety of doctors and other health workers. Apart from this, the apex court had taken seriously the allegations of mob violence in the hospital and Kolkata Police fleeing from the spot. The Supreme Court had ordered the deployment of CISF personnel in the hospital to ensure the return of the striking doctors to work.

Now, in an application filed in the matter, the Home Ministry said that the petition relates to the deployment of CISF personnel at RG Kar Medical College, including hostels where resident doctors reside, to ensure their safety.
