Know why Sheikh Hasina gave preference to India over China for the Teesta project

New Delhi: Bangladesh has taken a different tack on the Teesta water conservation and related SEZ project. PM Sheikh Hasina has declared that India, being a neighbour, has the right over the project and she would like it to implement it. It was also seen that during Sheikh Hasina’s recent visit to Beijing, China expressed its reluctance over the Teesta project. Our colleague Economic Times had earlier reported that Hasina cut short her China visit as Beijing did not give her adequate protocols, backing out on a $5 billion financial package. What did Sheikh Hasina say in her statement?
Hasina said in her statement that I will give priority that India will do this. India has the water of the Teesta river, so they should do the project and if they do this project then they will give whatever is required here. Sheikh Hasina said that we have to implement the Teesta project. China has given us a proposal. India has also given a proposal. After doing this, we will do what is suitable for us, but I will give more priority to this work being done by India because India has stopped the water of Teesta.

India is preferred over China
The Bangladesh Prime Minister was responding to a reporter’s question about her China visit. Hasina’s comments can also be seen as expressing her displeasure over the outcome of the China visit. The Prime Minister had told reporters after the summit meeting with Hasina last month that India has decided to send a technical team to Bangladesh for the proposed Teesta River Conservation and Management Project.
