Karnataka: Vokkaliga’s influence on 100 seats in Karnataka, know the planning of political parties for their votes?

JDS gets more seats

The HD Deve Gowda-led JD(S) counts the Vokkaligas as its main vote base in the old Mysore region. The main fight here is with the Congress. However, recently the BJP has been able to make some headway. Apparently, the BJP is trying to increase its base among this community.

Recently the reservation for Vokkaligas has been increased from four per cent to six per cent. The move pleased Vokkaliga community’s revered seer, Adichunchanagiri Mutt priest Swami Nirmalanandanath, who praised the BJP government. Not only this, the BJP also commissioned the construction of a 108-feet tall statue of Nada Prabhu Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bengaluru and the 16th-century head of the Vijayanagara dynasty, near the Bengaluru International Airport. Vokkaliga voters seem quite happy with this too.

Recently, Karnataka minister Munirathna, who is also a film producer, came up with a plan to make a film based on a folktale ‘Uri Gowda-Nanje Gowda’. The folklore is based on a belief among a section of people that there were two Vokkaliga chieftains in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysuru by the names of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda.

It was not the colonial British army but these two chieftains who killed Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore, a claim also supported by some BJP ministers. However, Muniratna abandoned the plan when Swami Nirmalanandanath asked him/her not to pursue the project saying that there was no historical basis behind the story and it would only create confusion among people.

A Vokkaliga union official, requesting anonymity, told PTI that if the film was made, it would help the BJP garner more votes. he/she said, “The ‘Uri Gowda Nanje Gowda’ project may have been dumped, but it is still being discussed among Vokkaligas. Besides, increasing reservation will have an impact on elections as well.”
