An extremely chaotic scene was witnessed in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. The BJP members, expressing their discontent with the Speaker’s decision to continue the House proceedings without stopping for lunch, resorted to throwing papers towards the Speaker’s podium. The House Deputy Speaker, Rudrappa Lamani, was conducting the proceedings when the BJP members vented their anger in this manner. Consequently, 10 BJP MLAs were suspended for the remainder of the assembly session due to their actions of throwing papers at the Speaker. Subsequently, following the suspension of these BJP MLAs, both the BJP and JDS have given notice to move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.
During the House proceedings, MLAs from the opposition BJP and JDS also protested by coming to the Well. Their protest centered around the allegation that the Congress government had deployed 30 IAS officers to serve its coalition leaders. The meeting, which took place in Bengaluru on Monday and Tuesday, aimed to devise a strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and to announce the formation of the new alliance named India.
Amidst the uproar, Speaker UT Khadar asserted that the proceedings of the House would not be interrupted for a lunch break, and discussions on budgetary and other matters would continue. Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani then took charge of the House, but angry MLAs threw papers towards the chairs of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, demanding clarification on the rule under which the lunch break was canceled.
