Kargil War 1999: Salute to the spirit, soldiers without uniforms also fought the Kargil war against Pakistan

Drass (Kargil): On Kargil Vijay Diwas, while the country remembered the stories of the bravery of the army, the heroes of Kargil mentioned the cooperation of the local people. They said that people without uniforms also fought this war for the country. In 1999, when Pakistan infiltrated and captured the Indian Army posts vacated in winter, the army started Operation Vijay to vacate them. Local people also played an important role in this. People in the villages near the LoC helped the army in every way. Many people transported logistics, ammunition and weapons to the peaks for the army through their horses and mules day and night. They also helped in bringing down the injured Indian soldiers from the peaks. Almost every youth of the village was engaged in helping the army and women were also included in this. Local people told that all the climbing was done at night. In the adverse conditions, everyone realized that fighting at such a height is no less than a challenge. Soldiers were moved here from different parts of the country. Maps were necessary for them so that they could understand the way to reach those peaks. But there was neither a map nor a clear route to reach those peaks. In such a situation, the local people took the responsibility and discovered new routes for the army in the mountainous areas, hidden from the eyes of the enemy, and worked as porters until the war ended.

Kargil hero also saluted
Kargil War Hero Param Vir Chakra winner Honorary Captain Yogendra Yadav said that the support of the people here was very important for the army. Every citizen here worked shoulder to shoulder with the Indian Army. The local people did the work of delivering ammunition to the hills and showing the way. he/she said that due to their support we were able to climb the hills and fight because every Indian is a soldier, whether he/she wears uniform or not. The local people here were soldiers without uniform in this war and we salute them.

Remembering the development after the war
Drass resident and journalist Ghulam Nabi Zia has seen the Kargil war from very close. he/she says that there was no road, no path, no weapons on the mountains because Pakistani soldiers came stealthily. People brought weapons for the Indian army to the hills. he/she says, ‘It is unfortunate that till date, no film or book written on Kargil has mentioned the contribution of the local people, which is definitely regrettable. People’s crops and cattle were destroyed in the war, but people also dedicated themselves to this war.’ Zia says that after this war, a lot of development work has been done in all the areas of Kargil, Drass and it has been done very fast. he/she said that war has its own tragedy but looking at the development that happened after this war, it seems that if the war had not happened, Drass would have probably been 20 years behind.

Support of local people is necessary anywhere
The support of the local people is very important in fighting any war. The way many terrorist incidents have happened one after another in Jammu recently has again highlighted this thing. Pakistani terrorists are present in Jammu and they cannot survive without local support. The Indian Army also gets information about the presence of terrorists and their activities from the local people. Human intelligence is important for any war. The way terrorists carried out ambush attacks in Jammu has also raised the question that why human intelligence is getting weak here and information about the conspiracy of terrorists is not being received on time.
