Karachi to have 44,000 street crime incidents in first seven months of 2024

Karachi has witnessed a rise in street crime incidents, with over 44,000 incidents recorded from January to July this year, ARY News reported.

According to data released by Karachi local police, street crime incidents have seen a surge in the first seven months of this year, with most of the crimes being related to motorcycle theft.

Over 31,000 motorcycles were either stolen or snatched from their owners in a span of seven months, making these the most common targets in street crime incidents, ARY News reported.

According to the data, more than 11,800 cases of mobile phone snatching were registered during this period.

The data also revealed that about 1,200 cars were snatched from citizens during the same period, adding to the already prevalent level of insecurity among residents.

However, despite the large number of thefts, the recovery rate remains low.

According to police reports, only 1,500 motorcycles, 220 cars and 120 mobile phones have been successfully recovered, ARY News reported.

Earlier on Friday, two people were killed in separate incidents in Karachi while resisting a robbery.

The deceased’s friend Anees, who was present at the spot at the time of the North Nazimabad incident, lodged a complaint.

The complaint stated that the robbers also targeted another man named Ali Hamza, who was on another bike along with Anees.

As per the FIR, the incident took place at KDA Chorangi flyover, reported ARY News.

The complainant was stopped by two armed men on a motorcycle, who then tortured him/her, snatched his/her wallet and cell phone, and threw away his/her bike keys. Later when he/she bent down to pick up the keys he/she heard a gunshot, and when he/she regained consciousness he/she saw that the robbers had shot his/her friend and fled.

In another incident, robbers shot dead labourer Allah Dino at Super Highway Industrial Area Ayub Goth while he/she was returning home with his/her child.
