The upcoming movie ‘Emergency’ directed by Kangana Ranaut, based on the life of former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, will not be released in Bangladesh. The reason for this is that political relations between the two neighboring countries remain tense. This film depicts the situation during the period of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in India. A source related to the matter said, ‘The decision to stop the screening of ‘Emergency’ in Bangladesh is related to the current tense relations between India and Bangladesh. More than the story of the film, the reason for the ban is more related to the ongoing political dynamics between the two countries.

Indira Gandhi played a role in the independence of Bangladesh

According to reports, Indira Gandhi played an important role in the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan. However, America had demanded him/her not to interfere in the affairs of both the countries. Nevertheless, Indira went ahead, as she felt it would be better for India economically to wage war against Pakistan, rather than harboring millions of refugees, which resulted in the India-Pakistan War of 1971.

‘Emergency’ depicts the role of the Indian Army and the Indira Gandhi government in the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971 and the support given to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is known as the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh. he/she called Indira Gandhi as Goddess Durga. The film also depicts the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the hands of Bangladeshi extremists, which is believed to have led to the film being banned in Bangladesh.

Changed equations with Bangladesh

According to the information, India fought the war on two fronts against West Pakistan and the then East Pakistan (which later became Bangladesh). At present Bangladesh was India’s only ally in the subcontinent. However, after the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power, the equations between the two countries have changed significantly. India now finds itself surrounded by hostile neighbors on all sides, including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the Taliban terrorist government in Afghanistan.

Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ is all set to release in theaters on January 17, 2025, after being postponed several times. Kangana has directed this film and is also a producer.
