Judges are trusting God instead of logic and knowledge…Mahua Moitra raised questions on the independence of courts in Parliament.

New Delhi: TMC MP Mahua Moitra expressed her views during the ongoing debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha on Friday. he/she raised questions on the independence of the judiciary. he/she accused some judges of lowering the dignity of the courts. Moitra also hit out at former CJI DY Chandrachud’s ‘prayed to God’ comment on the Ayodhya temple verdict. he/she said that the framers of the Constitution would never have imagined that judges would rely on personal conversations with God to deliver judgments instead of logic and knowledge.

Chandrachud had said this regarding Ram Janmabhoomi dispute

Former CJI Chandrachud had shared his/her personal experience of handling the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in October. he/she had said that he/she had prayed to God for a solution to this matter. During a felicitation ceremony at his/her native village Kanhersar, the former CJI revealed that he/she had sought divine intervention to find a solution to this complex case. This matter was before him/her for three months.

‘God will always find a way’

Chandrachud had said, ‘Often we have cases (to decide) but we do not reach any solution. Something similar happened during Ayodhya (Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute) which was in front of me for three months. I sat down before God and told him/her that he/she had to find a solution. he/she said, “‘Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way.’

Ruckus in the House after Moitra’s speech

Immediately after Mahua’s speech, the House was adjourned for half an hour till 5 pm. The ruling BJP took exception to his/her remarks and demanded the Speaker to remove him/her, leading to an uproar. BJP termed Moitra’s remarks as inappropriate. he/she demanded from the Speaker that Moitra’s comments be removed from the proceedings. Because of this there was an uproar in the house. After this the proceedings of the House were adjourned for half an hour.
