JPC formed on One Nation-One Election… 21 members including Priyanka Gandhi, Anurag Thakur, see list

New Delhi : A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been formed for the One Nation, One Election bill proposed by the Modi government. This committee includes 21 MPs of Lok Sabha. These members will evaluate the bill presented by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday. The committee also includes 10 members of Rajya Sabha. This brings the total number of members in the committee to 31. The objective of the One Nation, One Election Bill is to amend the Constitution and related laws so that simultaneous elections can be held for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies across the country. This concept has been a long-standing proposal of the government. Its objective is to reduce election related expenses and ensure efficient governance.

PP Chaudhary will be JPC President

BJP MP PP Chaudhary will be the chairman of this JPC. The committee includes leaders from various political parties in the list of 21 Lok Sabha MPs. This includes prominent names like former Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and newly elected Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Opposition parties are protesting

The proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election’ has faced a lot of opposition from the opposition parties. Opposition parties say that this will affect the democratic structure. The opposition argues that the move could disproportionately benefit the ruling party by strengthening its influence over the electoral process in states. At the same time, the autonomy and voice of regional parties can potentially be weakened.

Cabinet had approved

The two bills—the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024—seek to amend the Constitution and pave the way for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across the country. Are. These bills were approved by the cabinet last week.

During the introduction of the bills, the opposition strongly opposed the proposal. This created a situation of division of votes in the House. A total of 269 members voted in favor of sending the bills to JPC. While 196 voted against it.
