Joe Biden criticises US Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling

US President Joe Biden has criticised the “dangerous precedent” set by a Supreme Court ruling granting former and future presidents immunity from prosecution for official acts. he/she said it gives the executive office and potentially Donald Trump “the power to do whatever he/she wants, whenever he/she wants to do it.”

Biden said the court had done “a terrible injustice” to the people of this country by effectively blocking any chance of Trump’s participation in a trial related to the Jan. 6 riot.

The US Supreme Court handed down its verdict on Monday (local time), ruling by a 6-3 majority that Trump can claim immunity from criminal prosecution for some actions he/she took as president before leaving office, potentially further delaying a federal election sabotage trial related to his/her actions on January 6.

he/she quoted liberal Justice Sonia Sotomore’s dissent and agreed with her that the majority’s decision means “the president is now a king above the law with no fear for our democracy” and urged the American people to dissent as well. “I dissent,” Biden said.

“Every one of us is equal before the law. No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States,” Biden said during his/her live address from the White House.

“With today’s Supreme Court decision and presidential immunity, which for all practical purposes has fundamentally changed, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do,” Biden said.

Biden once again blamed Trump for the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and said the American people deserve answers in the courts about what happened at that time before voting in the November election.

“And that’s a dangerous precedent because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by law, even the United States Supreme Court,” Biden said.

Criticizing the Supreme Court’s decision, Biden said that this decision undermines the rule of law in this country.

“Today’s decision continues the Court’s assault in recent years on a wide range of long-established legal principles in our country. From eliminating voting rights and civil rights to taking away women’s right to choose, today’s decision undermines this country’s rule of law,” he/she said.

Biden stressed that the American people must decide whether the attack on Trump on January 6 makes him/her unfit to hold public office in the country.

“The American people must decide whether Donald Trump’s attack on our democracy on January 6 makes him/her unfit for the highest office in the land,” he/she said.

“Perhaps most importantly, the American people must decide whether they want to once again hand the presidency to Donald Trump, because now they know he/she will be even more emboldened to do whatever he/she wants to do, whatever he/she wants to do,” he/she said.
