Who has filed the petition?
In this petition filed by lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, citing the Lavanya case of Tamil Nadu, the intervention of the Supreme Court has been demanded. Lavanya, a 17-year-old student from Thanjavur, committed suicide by consuming insecticide on January 19 this year. Just before this he had made a video.

In that video, Lavanya said that her school ‘Sacred Heart Higher Secondary’ is pressurizing her to become a Christian. Troubled by the constant harassment for this, she is giving up her life. The Madras High Court had handed over the investigation of the incident to the CBI. The Supreme Court also upheld the order of the High Court.

Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde stood up to oppose the petition of Ashwini Upadhyay. Hegde appeared on behalf of SK Raghavendra, a resident of Chennai. Hegde said, “The petitioner himself is associated with a political party. The Supreme Court and the High Court have refused to hear his petition earlier. Now there should be no fresh hearing. Responding to this, Ashwini Upadhyay said that the Hegde is arguing for the person, he himself has converted to Christianity. Foreign funding is coming on a large scale to convert people. This is a serious matter.”

On this, the judges said that anyway there is paucity of time today. We are not hearing anything. The Central Government and the petitioners should inform us by gathering information about the situation in other states as well. The matter will be heard on Monday, December 5.
