ISRO is planning to save the world from the threat of asteroids, will join the mission with NASA!

New Delhi : The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has expressed its desire to research the asteroid Apophis that will pass near Earth in 2029. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath said that this asteroid will pass very close to Earth and it will be a unique opportunity for humanity. ISRO can work together with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), European Space Agency (ESA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in this study. In an international workshop held in Bengaluru, ISRO chief and senior scientists emphasized that when the Apophis asteroid will be passing close to Earth on April 13, 2029, India also wants to be a part of the defense mission in space.

What did ISRO chief Somnath say?

This workshop was organized to commemorate Asteroid Day 2024. In this, school students were inspired to find ways to protect the Earth from the effects of asteroids, the importance of asteroid research to better understand the universe. ISRO Chairman S Somnath said in the Asteroid Day program that when Apophis arrives in the year 2029. In such a situation, we will get a lot of help in research about this asteroid. This is a unique opportunity for humanity to work together on asteroids so that this asteroid does not collide with the Earth. India should be a part of such efforts. It is not yet decided how we will be included.

‘Apophis’ is approaching Earth in 2029

ISRO scientists said that we are working at full capacity to study the Apophis asteroid when it passes 32,000 km from Earth in 2029. So that the necessary planetary defense efforts can be prepared to prevent the asteroid from crashing on Earth. ISRO Chairman Somnath further said that this may include installing an instrument on the joint Apophis Asteroid Mission of JAXA, ESA and NASA. Or we can be involved by providing assistance in some way. We can also do something different. We would like to provide whatever cooperation is sought in the mission to participate and learn in it. We are eager to spread our knowledge.

Campaign to save Earth from asteroids

The ISRO chairman mentioned NASA’s DART mission in 2022, which helped change the trajectory of an asteroid in space. Somnath said that there are many missions to go near asteroids and understand them. One of these is the DART mission. he/she said that this is a mission to show that it is possible to slightly change the trajectory of an asteroid and move it out of its way. If we can change the trajectory of an asteroid, it will miss the Earth by a small margin. This will be enough to save the Earth.
