Israel moves forward with national plan to tackle climate change

Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection has published the first phase of a national plan to tackle climate change. This phase includes mapping the areas affected by climate change in Israel and the main steps to address and mitigate risks.

The aim of the National Preparedness Plan is to diagnose and map the areas in Israel most affected by climate change, identify the impacts on them, prioritize and consolidate key steps in order to mitigate risks and take advantage of opportunities in these areas.

The plan includes 48 proposals and nearly 200 actions that around 30 ministries and government bodies will have to promote and implement in the coming years, in order to improve Israel’s preparedness for the climate crisis.

About 50% of the initiatives in the programme are related to establishment and development of knowledge infrastructure, planning and implementation, and construction.

The plan has been prepared based on a review of international preparedness plans, previous work carried out in Israel, interactions with ministries and other governmental and local government bodies, discussions with experts, and a review of the measures taken by the Directorate during the years of its activities.
