Is the matter with China starting to settle down? What does the withdrawal of Chinese troops from four places on the LAC mean? Know the inside story

New Delhi : Foreign Minister Dr. Jaishankar said in Geneva on Thursday that 75 percent of the problems related to the withdrawal of troops with China have been resolved. A day later, a statement came in the press conference of the Chinese Foreign Ministry that in the past years, the armies of both the countries have withdrawn from four areas in the Western Sector on the India-China border. The developments regarding bilateral relations between India and China have happened very fast in two days.

Meaning of Doval, Wang Yi meeting

However, its signs were visible on Thursday itself during the meeting between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the BRICS NSA level summit in St. Petersburg. In the press note issued by the Indian Foreign Ministry after the meeting, it was mentioned that both the countries have agreed to work towards complete disengagement in the remaining areas as well. Experts believe that the process of moving towards resolving the deadlock does not happen suddenly. Work keeps happening in the background for this.

Wait and watch situation right now

Kalpit Mankikar, a fellow at ORF and expert on China affairs, says that ‘this happens as a part of a long process. The national security advisors of both the countries and the foreign ministers of both the countries have been meeting regularly. For the last four years, efforts are being made continuously to resolve border issues. Such efforts were being made by both India and China. However, in view of what is visible now, we can only remain in a wait and watch situation as to what direction such efforts will take. In view of the deadlock on the border, a mechanism has been prepared to hold meetings of foreign ministers and national security advisors.

Both countries want to resume political dialogue

On the other hand, Professor Harsh Pant, an expert on China affairs, says that from the statements coming from both sides, it seems that both sides want the political dialogue to be resumed at a high level. It doesn’t seem anything more than that because there are problems between India and China, Jaishankar has also recently said that the economic relations between the two are unbalanced, so it doesn’t seem that there has been any fundamental change in the relationship. The only effort seems to be to restart the dialogue, so that the problems can be assessed properly.

BRICS meeting will be important

Experts also consider the BRICS meeting in October to be very important. Kalpit further says that even though the Indian Foreign Ministry has not said this clearly, there are speculations that some kind of meeting can take place between the two countries there. Let us tell you that during this time President Putin has invited PM Narendra Modi to come to Russia for the BRICS conference to be held in Kazan, Russia next month. During that time Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be present there.

The reason is China’s economic difficulty

Experts say that China’s economic difficulties can also be the reason behind the breaking of the ice in relations. Kalpit says that the Chinese government had set a target of five percent GDP from April to June, but the actual GDP figures were only 4.7 percent. China is currently facing unemployment. Investment is also at a minimum level. European and American companies have lost faith in China. In such a situation, there is a lot of pressure on the Chinese government. Along with this, the foreign policy of the Modi government has further increased China’s sense of insecurity regarding Taiwan and Tibet.

Told China about the problem

Recently, at the Economic Times Summit, Dr. Jaishankar had described China as India’s special problem, after which a critical article about it appeared in China’s government newspaper Global Times. But within a few hours, that article was removed from the website. By removing the article at that time, China expressed in a way that it is not the right timing to show such views at the moment. Meanwhile, there is also speculation that the two countries are working on preparing for the role of the top-level meeting in BRICS, this is also a reason behind this development.
