Is Rahul Gandhi’s statement about Agniveer correct or Rajnath’s? Know who said what in the House

New Delhi : During the discussion on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said many things about the Agniveer and Agneepath schemes and targeted the government. his/her statement was opposed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. How correct is Rahul Gandhi’s statement about Agniveer? Is Rahul misleading the House or are his/her allegations correct?

On martyr status and pension

Rahul Gandhi said that I met the family of Agniveer in Punjab. he/she was martyred in a landmine blast. I am calling him/her a martyr but the government and Narendra Modi do not call him/her a martyr, they call him/her Agniveer. he/she will neither get the status of a martyr nor a pension. The government will help a common soldier but not Agniveer. Agniveer is given 6 months of training while Chinese soldiers get 5 years of training and Agniveer is made to stand with a rifle. Rahul Gandhi said that a division is being created among the soldiers, one gets pension and martyr status and the other does not and then they (government) call themselves patriots.

Is Rahul misleading the House?

Rajnath Singh said that Rahul Gandhi is trying to mislead the House by making false statements. In case of martyrdom, an amount of Rs 1 crore is given to the Agniveer as assistance. Along with this, Home Minister Amit Shah also said that the House is not a place to lie. Factual position should be taken. If the Leader of the Opposition does not verify his/her statement, then he/she should apologize.

what is the current situation

If an Agniveer attains martyrdom, he/she is given a final farewell with full military honours. According to the Indian Army, as per the service conditions of Agniveer, in case of battle casualty, the family will be given Rs 48 lakh as insurance (non-contributory), service fund deposited by the Agniveer (30 percent) and the same amount by the government. Rs 44 lakh will be given as ex gratia and the salary for the remaining tenure (total tenure of four years).

Apart from this, Rs 8 lakh will be given from Armed Forces Battle Casualty Fund and Rs 30,000 as immediate help from AWWA. If a regular soldier is martyred, his/her family also gets the same financial help. However, in the case of Agniveer, Agniveer does not deposit the insurance money whereas in the case of regular soldier, his/her insurance is contributory.

Apart from this, if a regular soldier is martyred, his/her family gets pension based on his/her last salary. Apart from this, the benefits of Army canteen and military hospital that an ex-soldier gets are also given to the martyr’s family. Agniveer does not get this.

Whose is Agnipath Scheme?

Rahul Gandhi said that the truth is known to the army and the Agniveers. The whole country knows that the Agniveer scheme is not of the army, it is the PMO’s scheme. It is not the brain child of the army, it is the brain child of the PM.

This was like a short service commission for officers. But the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) later came up with a different scheme – Agneepath in which all recruitments will be for four years. It is still not clear when General Naravane’s book will be released. his/her book has not yet received the approval of the Defense Ministry.
