Interview: Nana Patekar said – This is my last chance, people will not remember what I did yesterday

Nana Patekar is currently in the news for the film ‘Vanvas’, which has been directed by ‘Gadar 2’ fame Anil Sharma. Nana told in the interview why people find it difficult to work with him/her and what he/she thinks about today’s actors.

Nana Patekar, known as an outspoken and angry actor, has been considered a vast storehouse of talent. This is the reason why he/she has countless memorable roles and three National Awards to his/her credit. This actor, who once managed to earn ten paisa, today charges crores. These days Nana Patekar is in the news for his/her family film ‘Vanvas’. A special conversation with him/her:

You have done many memorable roles in Hindi films with many big directors, but why is it said about you that it is very difficult to work with you?

-Look, what should I say on this now, it is obvious that in film making, the script and casting are all decided in advance, despite this, if an artist comes to the set, his/her lines are not ready, he/she does not know the script, I can’t bear such situations when the producer doesn’t give you your money after it’s finalized, or other artists working on the set don’t get their money on time. I feel that since I am the main artiste, you have given my money, but are not giving it to the minor artistes. Now when I raise my voice on these things and you call it difficult, I am difficult.

‘I directly tell the actors that if you can’t remember even four lines, then why have you become an actor? I have nothing to do with which car you travel by. I don’t care what your vanity is. What I mean by this is whether you have love for work or not. You will have to come prepared on the set. If you don’t come prepared, I will object. All these things make me a difficult actor, so I don’t care.

How much have you had to suffer for your outspokenness?

-Tell me one thing, you have to die only once. But if I keep dying every day, I won’t be able to look at myself in the mirror. What to fear? By death? Nothing worse can happen than that, right? She can come any time. I am not insulting you. If you do right, I call it right, but if you do wrong, I call it wrong. As far as bearing the brunt is concerned, the maximum that will happen is that you will not give me work. We will not work. I have a foundation under which a big work of water conservation is being done, so if this work is not available then I will do some other work. Acting is in front of the camera, but one has to comment on the discrepancies around. Cinema is just entertainment, entertainment, entertainment, I don’t believe in it, entertainment is important, but if cinema does not give any commentary, then there is no point in working.

There was a time in the initial phase of your career when you used to get fifty rupees for a drama show.

-And now we get crores. But the problem is, what will you do with those crores? Because for years we have kept our needs limited. If you do not use that money for the right purpose, then it is just a piece of paper. Although I am thinking about where to use that money. As far as that fifty rupees are concerned, when we got those fifty rupees, we used to pay ration for the whole house for a month in 150 rupees, which was enough for mother, father, me and my brother. If I did 15 shows, I would get Rs 750, which was enough for our entire family.

We used to carry bread wrapped in newspaper. We didn’t even have tiffin. Such were the times, but where will one learn now what those days taught?

‘I remember, our father used to charge 20 paise for the kurta press. When my father asked me to get that kurta ironed, I used to say, ‘Father, I will do it’, then father would give me ten paisa. Ten paise was a lot at that time. I used to study in JJ School of Arts and at that time I used to get four annas as pocket money. Outside the Times of India, one could buy banana for 15 paise and two bananas for five paise each. I used to buy bananas from outside Anjuman Islam School in Mumbai. We used to carry bread wrapped in newspaper. We didn’t even have tiffin. Such were the times, but where will one learn now what those days taught?

Now what do you think about the awards? You have received three National Awards.

-Awards are not important for me, if I get one, I feel good, but that is a moment, wow, I got it. But that is temporary. I have received three National Awards, that’s a lot. Yes, when I got the National Award for ‘Parinda’, my mother said, how are you getting the award for playing such a disgusting role. My mother was from a village, so this was a very surprising thing for her.

‘To be honest, getting an award is a nice feeling, but I don’t want my films to be just art films, they should get a lot of awards. I want to do such a film which reaches maximum audience. Now there is a film like ‘Natsamrat’. I think it is important for any film to connect with the audience. Now, I don’t remember counting how many times I have seen Dilip Kumar’s ‘Ganga Jamuna’.

How do you handle the controversies and trolling around?

-You appreciate, abuse, what difference does it make to me. Whatever you have to say, you will say it, I don’t have anything to do with it. I am happy with myself.

In your previous Marathi film ‘Ole Aale’ also you played the role of a father and in your latest film ‘Vanvas’ too you are seen playing the role of a father, so are you now getting attracted towards fatherly roles?

-We are also thinking of making this Marathi film in Hindi. I have asked the makers to cast Shahid Kapoor for the son’s role in Hindi. I find Shahid an amazing actor. I like two actors very much, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor. The rest of the actors are also good, but I like these two actors more. I did ‘Pathshala’ with Shahid. he/she is an amazing actor. Now look at Utkarsh, this boy has done a great job in the film.

‘As far as playing the role of a father is concerned, our father is always shown in a typical melodramatic style, but this character of ‘Vanvas’ is not like that. This character is actually the story of every household. You will all be able to relate to this. I never got a chance to play that kind of character. The character moves forward with the humor that is created in the inconsistencies. I think this is my last chance. So I put my soul into my role. Look, people won’t remember what I did yesterday, but people will remember my work today. So I left no stone unturned.
