Instead of continuing the war… what role will India play in stopping the Russia-Ukraine conflict? Jaishankar told clearly

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar introduced the world to India’s active diplomacy in the Doha Forum. he/she talked about how India is helping to resolve global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war. Jaishankar on Saturday referred to direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev. They also discussed tensions in the Gulf and Mediterranean regions. Jaishankar expressed hope that a solution can be found through talks. At the Doha Forum, Jaishankar said, ‘We are trying to find some common threads on which further talks can be held.’ This will happen when the circumstances are right for talks. On India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine war, Jaishankar said, ‘The possibility of dialogue is greater than continuing the war.’ he/she stressed that ‘the war has had a huge impact on developing countries. Rising prices of fuel, food, inflation and fertilizers are examples of this.

Jaishankar said that India is keeping the sentiments and interests of the countries of the ‘Global South’ in mind. These are 125 countries which are affected by this war. he/she added, ‘Over the past few weeks and months, I have heard major European leaders say the same. They are asking us to please keep talking to Russia and Ukraine. So we think things are moving in that direction.

‘Need for new and participatory diplomacy’

Jaishankar stressed the need for a new and participatory diplomacy to deal with the world’s challenges. he/she gave the example of ongoing tensions in the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. he/she also mentioned the Israel-Iran rivalry and the disruption of shipping routes affecting Asia. Jaishankar said diplomats must recognize the complex realities of the world and move forward. he/she also said that the era of 60s and 70s has passed. The conflicts were then managed by the UN Security Council or some Western powers. Now all countries need to come forward.
