Industry leaders praise India’s tech surge at Hardeep Singh Puri’s ‘Vishesh Sampark Abhiyan’ event

Industry leaders gathered for a ‘Special Contact Campaign’ event at the residence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, where they discussed the rapid progress in India’s tech sector and the future of the country.

The event, held on Monday evening, brought together some of the country’s top IT professionals, innovators, startup leaders and intellectuals.

Rikant Pitti, co-founder of EaseMyTrip, highlighted the growth of startups in India and said that the future of the country lies in the hands of technology.

“In 2018, there were 450 registered startups. Today this number has increased to more than 1 lakh. The startup ecosystem is expanding rapidly. With the Digital India initiative launched in 2015, Internet access has become widespread. Under the BharatNet scheme, more than 2.5 lakh gram panchayats and villages now have internet connectivity. The future of the country is completely in the hands of technology,” he said while speaking to ANI.

MoS Rajiv Chandrashekhar noted the substantial growth in India’s digital economy.

“India’s digital economy has grown 2.8 times. I am very optimistic that we can become a developed India before 2047. There is no other country in the world that is expanding its digital public infrastructure that rapidly,” he said.

Rakesh Verma, CEO and Co-Founder, Semiconductor Microelectronics, discussed the growth prospects in India’s semiconductor industry and how India’s $24 billion import industry will grow to $100 billion.

“I was in the semiconductor field for about 27 years. Then I thought of quitting my job and doing something for India. We thought it was the right time for government policies to come in, so we started our own company in 2017. I have about 12 patents, and Pratap (co-founder) has about 30 patents. Our company has 10 patents,” he said.

“We thought of starting our company with products that can be useful not only in India but also abroad. It is right to get into chips and integrated circuits (ICs), and with the policies coming in, it is more favorable to us. India’s imports are $24 billion and will increase to $100 billion in the near future. So this is the right time to get into chips as it is more favorable for us,” he said while speaking to ANI.

Pankaj Mohindroo, President, Indian Cellular Association, talked about the remarkable growth in India’s electronics sector.

“The story of mobile phones, what has happened in India is a very inspiring story. In 2014, we were at ground zero at that time. From there we have grown approximately 2100 percent. We are producing phones worth more than Rs 4 lakh crore. This increase is about 21 times,” he said.

“In electronics, we have grown almost 400 per cent. Electronics is now worth $150 million. Electronics was an area that had been completely abandoned by the investment world. It was a bad word. Today we have a lot of listed companies. The passion is hot. The evaluation we are getting is very hot.

Rajan Anandan, MD, Peak XV Partners, outlined the broader transformation of India’s digital ecosystem.

“After the 2014 reforms, the number of active mobile phone data users in India has exceeded 800 million, which is higher than that of the US and China. So this is an extraordinary transformation of the digital ecosystem,” he said.

“When it comes to Digital India we without a doubt have the most vibrant in terms of broad-based innovation ecosystem. “But the thing I’m most excited about is deregulation in specific, strategic areas.”

In his speech he said, “Deregulation and opening up of strategic sectors like space, defense etc. have boosted innovation. Due to the ecosystem provided by the government in the last 10 years, India has become a top innovator in cutting-edge sectors like aerospace, space and defence, which was unimaginable in the past!

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri echoed these sentiments while praising the young professionals present at the event.
