India’s total coal production reached 384.07 MT, witnessed a growth of 6.36%

India produced a total of 384.07 million tonnes (MT) of coal between April and August 2024, up 6.36 per cent from 361.11 MT in the same period last year, the Coal Ministry said in a statement.

However, total coal production will slightly decline to 62.67 MT in August 2024, from 67.76 MT in August 2023.

India’s coal production and supply trends for the period April to August 2024 show a positive trend, although there have been some short-term changes in the month of August 24, as mining and mobility were affected due to above normal rainfall.

The supply of coal across the country during the same period from April to August 2024 was 412.69 MT, which is 5.17 percent more than 392.40 MT during the same period last year. However, the supply of coal decreased slightly to 69.94 MT in August 2024, while it was 75.19 MT in August 2023.

Supply of coal to the power sector remains a key priority. Coal supply to the power sector between April and August 2024 reached 338.75 MT, up 4.13 per cent from 325.33 MT supplied during the same period last year.

Supply to the power sector in August 2024 stood at 58.07 MT, marginally lower than 61.43 MT recorded in August 2023.

As of August 31, 2024, the coal stock level at thermal power plants has increased significantly to 37.18 MT, an increase of 32.08 per cent compared to 28.15 MT on the same day in 2023.

These results reflect the commitment of the Ministry of Coal to ensure stable coal production and supply to meet the energy needs of the country and to address the operational challenges in the sector.

The Coal Ministry said in a statement that it is committed to meeting the energy demands of the country through reliable coal production and supply.
