high level technology transfer
This also includes high level technology transfer. These submarines will be fitted with AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) system. With this, these submarines will be able to remain under water for two weeks. This will greatly increase their privacy. The first submarine is expected to enter service approximately seven years after the signing of the contract.
Bid made in collaboration with German company
MDL had bid in collaboration with German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems i.e. TKMS. A technical inspection committee examined the bidding process and the testing conducted last year. After this the bid of MDL was approved. The Navy had earlier pointed out some shortcomings. These shortcomings were related to the need for a sea-tested AIP system. Now the next step is to open the commercial bids submitted by MDL.
Approval will be sought after discussion
After review of the offer, detailed discussions will be held on technical aspects and commercial terms. After this, a proposal worth about Rs 43 thousand crore will be sent to the competent authorities for approval. This is a huge project. Of these, six submarines are to be built in India. Besides, there will also be a major technology transfer of technical knowledge.
