India’s June 2024 coal production rises 14.49 percent to 84.63 million tonnes

India’s coal production for June 2024 has witnessed a rise, reaching 84.63 million tonnes (MT), marking a growth of 14.49 per cent over the same period last year when production stood at 73.92 MT.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Coal, public sector Coal India Limited (CIL) has played a vital role in this growth.

CIL achieved coal production of 63.10 MT in June 2024, showing a growth of 8.87 per cent over the previous year figure of 57.96 MT.

Captive and other coal producers witnessed an even higher increase in production. In June 2024, these entities collectively produced 16.03 MT of coal, up 55.49 per cent from 10.31 MT recorded in June last year.

This rapid growth highlights the increasing role of private and captive miners in augmenting coal supply in India.

There has also been a significant increase in coal dispatch. The press release said that the total coal dispatch for June 2024 reached 85.76 MT, an increase of 10.15 per cent compared to 77.86 MT in the same month last year.

CIL alone dispatched 64.10 MT of coal, which is 5.41 per cent higher than 60.81 MT dispatched in June 2023, the ministry said.

Coal dispatch from captive and other coal producers increased by an impressive 43.84 per cent, from 11.30 MT to 16.26 MT.

The ministry has also reported a significant increase in coal reserves. The press release said that as of June 30, 2024, coal companies had reserves of 95.02 MT, reflecting a robust annual growth rate of 41.68 per cent.

Thermal power plants (TPPs) also witnessed a significant increase in coal stocks, with their stocks reaching 46.70 MT, an annual increase of 30.15 per cent. This increase is crucial to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the country, especially during peak demand periods.

These gains in coal production and storage are in line with the Government of India’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, the ministry said.
