PM Modi was on a visit to Russia on 8-9 July
Modi was in Russia on July 8-9 for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. The summit was closely watched by Western countries amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This was Modi’s first visit to Russia since the war between Russia and Ukraine began in 2022. During talks with Putin on July 9, Prime Minister Modi told him/her that the solution to the Ukraine conflict is not possible on the battlefield and peace efforts do not succeed amid bombs and bullets. India has been strongly defending its ties with Russia and the relations between the two countries have remained strong despite the Ukraine conflict. India has not yet condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has been consistently advocating a resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
America sought support from India on Ukraine issue
The US State Department has underlined bilateral cooperation with India in various fields and said that the US wants India to support its efforts to establish a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Vedant Patel said this in response to a question on Thursday about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. he/she said, “India is our partner in many key areas, and this was clearly demonstrated last summer when Prime Minister Modi came to the US on a state visit.” Patel said, “In addition, in the context of the ongoing war between Ukraine-Russia and its impact on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, we request all our partners, including India, to support efforts to establish a lasting and just peace in Ukraine.” The Foreign Ministry asked Russia to withdraw its troops from the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
