Indians do not want to study in Canada, students are disillusioned with Trudeau’s country, applications reduced by 80%

India-Canada diplomatic tensions: Due to the increasing diplomatic tension between India and Canada, Indian students seem to be becoming disillusioned about studying in Canada. Experts say that there is a decline of about 80% in the number of Indian students applying to Canada for the 2025 academic session. According to the Economic Times, delays in visa processing and limited employment opportunities have also increased the anxiety of students.
Career guidance expert Karan Gupta said that the number of students applying to Canada for the 2025 session has decreased by about 80%. She also pointed out that child safety has become a major issue for parents, and Canada is no longer seen as a safe place due to the current political climate.

Parents worried about children’s safety in Canada

Collegify CEO Adarsh Khandelwal said that applications for graduation in the 2025 session are only a quarter of the normal. Many students and their parents are now reconsidering applications to Canadian institutions, especially due to visa and security related concerns. At the same time, according to educational counseling services, the number of students applying for the 2025 session has decreased by 50-60%. Especially the number of people applying for graduation studies has decreased.

Canada’s situation changed after tension with India

Experts say that this decline is not just due to diplomatic tensions, but the rising cost of living, housing crisis and limited employment opportunities in Canada have also reduced the attraction of students. Canada was the most popular destination for Indian students between 2021 and 2023, but the diplomatic tension that started in September 2023 changed the situation. Additionally, Canada announced a 35% reduction in visa applications for international students in 2024 and a further 10% reduction for 2025.

Admissions of Indians are going to decrease in Canada

Career Mosaic admitted 1,000 students to Canada in 2021, but that number dropped to 300 in 2024. Company founder Abhijeet Zaveri said that in 2025 this number may further reduce to only 200. The decline is being exacerbated by problems such as the housing crisis, delays in visa processing, and changes in visa policies. Ranjit Kumar C, CEO of GoStudy, said that in the last few months, inquiries from students towards Canadian universities have also decreased by 30%.

What will be the impact of Indian students not going to Canada?

The declining number of Indian students will not only impact Canada’s education sector but also other related industries and housing sectors. Vaibhav Gupta, co-founder of iSchoolConnect, believes that Canadian companies may informally put a halt to hiring Indian students, making the employment situation more difficult for Indians. However, students who have applied for 2024 or are already studying in Canada will not be directly affected by the current stress, but the situation may become more serious in 2025.
