The Department of Homeland Security (Ministry of Home Affairs) on Monday arrested Postdorel Fellow Badar Khan Suri of Georgetown University located at Washington DC. he/she was accused of spreading the propaganda of Hamas. Currently, an American Federal Judge has banned Suri from being deployed from the US. Action on Badar Khan has taken place at a time when another Indian student had to leave the US in a hurry.
Indian student’s visa canceled for supporting Hamas
Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian student studying at Colombia University, self-departed in Canada. Srinivasan is accused of advocating violence and terrorism and involved in activities supporting Hamas. After this, his/her student visa was canceled by the US government. Talking to the New York Times, Ranjani had said that the atmosphere in America had become very bad. he/she was worried about his/her future.
Indian students follow local laws: Ministry of External Affairs
Randhir Jaiswal, while answering a question in his/her weekly media briefing, said that the Indian Embassy and Consulate in the US would help the students facing any difficulty. Jaiswal said that deciding on visa and immigration policy is the privilege of the respective countries and related laws should be followed.
he/she said, “When it comes to visa and immigration policy, it comes under the sovereign actions of a country.” he/she added, “We, on our behalf, hope that when foreign nationals come to India, they follow our laws and rules. And similarly, we also hope that when Indian citizens are abroad, they should follow local laws and rules.”
What did the Ministry of External Affairs say on the matter of Indian students?
On being detained by Badar Khan Suri, ministry spokesman Jaiswal said, “We have come to know through media reports that the Indian man has been detained.” he/she also said, “Neither the US government nor this person has contacted us or the embassy. Therefore, we have understood this.”
In the case of Srinivasan, Jaiswal said that the Indian side is not aware that he/she had approached the Indian Embassy or a consulate in the US for help. he/she said, “We came to know from media reports about her leaving from America. We have come to know that she has gone to Canada.”
