Indian Students Abroad: Indian students are rapidly ‘running’ abroad after Covid! The number increased four times

Indian students abroad: During the Covid pandemic in 2020, only 2,59,655 students were able to go to foreign universities to study. After that, this number is increasing rapidly every year. In 2023, more than three times the number of students, 8,92,989 students, have gone to study in foreign educational institutions. In response to a written question in the Lok Sabha, the Education Ministry said that according to the information provided by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI), 29,33,899 (about 30 lakh) students while going abroad in the last five years, The purpose was said to be education.
The number of students going abroad in 2019 was before Covid. It was halved during Covid, but after that it has increased rapidly and all the records of the pre-Covid years have also been broken. In 2019, 5,86,337 students went abroad. In 2020 this number dropped to only 2,59,655. After that, 4,44,553 students went in 2021, 7,50,365 students in the next year 2022 and in 2023 this number became the highest at 8,92,989. The number of students going abroad was 2.59 lakh in 2020, 5.86 lakh in 2019, 5.17 lakh in 2018 and 4.54 lakh in 2017.

Government is taking steps to provide high-quality education in the country

The government says that studying abroad is a matter of student’s choice. The Government of India has taken major steps to ensure availability of quality education at every level in the country. The recently launched PM Vidyalakshmi Yojana aims to assist students studying in quality education institutions. India’s top educational institutions are entering into agreements with major foreign institutions and joint research is being promoted.

Now campuses of foreign universities are also being started in India so that Indian students can get degrees from foreign universities while staying in the country and there is no financial burden on them. Various reports and surveys have revealed that America is emerging as the first choice for studying abroad. Indians are taking admission in universities of America, Canada and European countries.

QS World Universities is responsible for making the list of the world’s top institutions. QS World University Rankings for 2025 have been released. According to this, America’s MIT i.e. Massachusetts Institute of Technology is at number one among the top 10 universities. Imperial College of London has got second position. Harvard University and Oxford University are at third place, Cambridge University is at fifth place, Stanford University is at sixth place, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is at seventh place. After that comes National University of Singapore, UCL (University College London) of England and California Institute of Technology of America.
