London: in Britain
jalebi baba As the case is constantly in the headlines. An Indian-origin British doctor, already convicted of 115 offenses of sexual assault against 28 women in the UK, has been jailed for two more years for carrying out meaningless tests. Manish Shah, 53, was given a separate life sentence on Monday with a minimum of 10 years. Last month, Shah was found guilty of 25 sexual assaults against four women at his GP clinic in Romford, east London, the BBC reported.
Old Bailey (sentencing at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales) judge Peter Rook said Shah remained a ‘danger to women’. Prosecutor Ryl Kermy-Jones KC told the Old Bailey that Shah took advantage of his position to persuade women to undergo invasive vaginal exams, breast exams, intimate exams when there was no need for them. General Practitioners (GPs) used high-profile cases involving celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Jade Goody to persuade female patients to undergo these tests.
Convicted of 115 offenses of sexual assault
The trial heard that Shah was a ‘reputable’ GP whose appointments were often fully booked, but in reality he ‘molested and abused’ women. Some of his victims told the court that Shah used to call them a ‘star’, a ‘special girl’ and his ‘favourite’. Shah has denied any wrongdoing and told the Old Bailey at the 2020 trial that the investigation’s allegations against me were ‘defensive medicine’.
He was suspended from medical practice in 2013 after a police investigation began. In February 2020, he was sentenced to three life terms with a minimum of 15 years in prison for 90 offenses against 24 women after two separate trials. Shah has now been convicted of 115 offenses of sexual assault against 28 women in the age group of 15 to 34 years.
