India will help Taliban in settling Afghan refugees who fled after attacks in Pakistan

New Delhi: India is planning to assist Afghanistan in setting up several projects in the health and education sectors for the rehabilitation of refugees who fled from Pakistan. India’s support for Afghan refugees comes at a time when Pakistan is expelling them. This has become a point of dispute between Kabul and Islamabad.

Meeting with Taliban Foreign Minister in Dubai

According to information received by our associate newspaper Economic Times, after the meeting between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaki in Dubai, India has decided to provide more assistance to Afghanistan.

1 million refugees from Pakistan reach Taliban

Since the end of 2023, Pakistan and Iran have sent about one million refugees back to Afghanistan. According to Afghan officials, the interim administration has started distributing land to refugees.

Highly placed sources told our associate newspaper Economic Times that there is awareness on the part of the Taliban about the historical nature of India-Afghanistan relations. An official indicated that from the Indian side, the meeting itself was a message of sorts. But we also indicated a change in attitude from a purely humanitarian point of view.

Discussion on cooperation in cricket

Both sides also discussed strengthening sports (cricket) cooperation. Another official said it was also agreed to promote the use of Chabahar port for trade and commercial activities. Misri and Muttaki also discussed regional developments. India has condemned Pakistan’s air strikes on Afghanistan.

The Afghan side underlined its sensitivity towards India’s security concerns. The Afghan Minister appreciated and thanked India for engaging with and supporting the people of Afghanistan.
