The year 2024 gave Indian sports fans many opportunities to celebrate. 2024 added some memorable moments to Indian sports but the dates that will be remembered include 29 June, 30 July, 12 December and 28 December. This year’s performance also instilled confidence that the intention and claim to host the 2036 Olympics is a step in the right direction. This is a step that has the potential to change the sports landscape of the country.

India’s biggest achievement of the year in sports came to light on June 29. On this day, on a sultry evening in Barbados, the Indian cricket team led by Rohit Sharma won the T20 World Cup. In the same year, former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jai Shah also became the President of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

On July 30, a month after the success of the Indian cricket team, pistol shooter Manu Bhaker became the first Indian player since independence to win two medals in one Olympics. On the other hand, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra won a medal again in the Paris Olympics. However, this time he/she had to be satisfied with the silver medal. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won the gold of this event with a record breaking performance.

India could have rewritten Olympic history in Paris, but ultimately finished 71st among the 206 nations participating in the Games with six medals, including one silver and five bronze. These Games will be remembered as much for the six medals as for the six events in which he/she finished fourth. India had gone to Paris with the aim of winning double digit medals for the first time but it could not even match the Tokyo Olympics where India had won seven medals including one gold.

Another major attraction for India in the Paris Olympics was the men’s hockey team winning its second consecutive medal (bronze). However, there were some mistakes in the Paris Olympics, which will be regretted in future also. However, this shows that India still needs to do a lot before becoming a sports superpower.

Along with his/her record-breaking performance at the Paris Paralympics, para-athlete and veteran tennis star Rohan Bopanna’s win at the Australian Open men’s doubles title at the age of 44 also left an indelible mark.

India won a total of 29 medals including seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze in the Paralympic Games. he/she stood 18th in the medal table. Para players like Avani Lekhara, Sumit Antil, Mariyappan Thangavelu, Sheetal Devi, Nitesh Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Navdeep Singh, Sheetal Devi, Harvinder Singh and Dharambir emerged as new heroes due to their performance.
