New Delhi: Mohammad Muizzoo, who won the post of President of Maldives by winning on the slogan of ‘India Out’, will be on a tour of India from 6-10 October. During this visit, he/she will meet President Draupadi Murmu, after which there will be bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A statement issued from Muizzu’s office said that he/she is committed to taking forward bilateral relations with those countries which are playing an important role in the development of Maldives. This is Muizzu’s first official visit to India. he/she came to India in June during the swearing-in of PM Narendra Modi. At that time, he/she had expressed happiness at receiving the Prime Minister’s invitation and attending the swearing-in ceremony. Recently, Muizzu, during an address at Princeton University in America, had said that he/she never launched an anti-India campaign.

Relations between the two countries are not going well

In the elections held in September last year, the people of Maldives made Mohammed Muizzu victorious. At that time, he/she had promised in his/her election campaign that he/she would expel the Indian troops present in Maldives from the country. he/she repeated this in his/her first address also. Meanwhile, several rounds of talks were held between the two countries regarding the transfer of Indian staff who were engaged in medical emergency, rescue and maritime patrolling. Subsequently, India deployed technical staff in place of military staff. This was the time when the most uneasy phase of relations between the two countries was going on.

India gradually took steps towards improving relations with Maldives through its diplomacy. First in May was the visit of Maldivian Foreign Minister Musa Zameer, and then in September Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Maldives brought relations back on the track of ease. Therefore, it is expected that during this visit of Muizzu, important agreements can be seen between India and Maldives in many other areas apart from tourism.
