India got the key to technology of hypersonic missiles, huge success for the first time

New Delhi: India has achieved another major success in the defense sector. It has taken a big step towards making supersonic missiles. Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested the active cooled combustor of the scramjet engine on the ground for 120 seconds. This has happened for the first time in the country. Hypersonic missiles fly five times the speed of sound. That means these missiles are faster than Mach 5.

India got this success for the first time

The world’s major powers are busy developing these missiles because they can dodge existing missile and air defense systems. Their fast speed, excellent control and ability to fly at low altitude make them special. DRDO’s Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) recently conducted a ground test of an active cooled scramjet combustor for 120 seconds.

Advancement in hypersonic technology

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed happiness over this success. he/she said, ‘This achievement is an important step in the development of next generation hypersonic missiles.’ At the same time, a DRDO official said, ‘Many countries including America, Russia, China and India are working on hypersonic technology.’ The key to this technology are scramjet engines. These engines can sustain combustion at supersonic speeds without any moving parts.

Many notable achievements were seen in the ground testing. Such as successful ignition and stable combustion. This shows the possibility of its use in hypersonic vehicles. Giving an interesting example, the official said, ‘Ignition in a scramjet engine is like ‘keeping a candle lit in a storm’. ‘Ignition in a scramjet engine is like ‘keeping a candle lit in a storm.’ Endothermic scramjet fuel jointly developed by Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and industry has played an important role in this success. This special fuel helps keep the engine cool and ignites easily.
