IND vs NZ: ‘Seniors should take responsibility, Gautam Gambhir is not to blame…’ Indian cricketers came in support of the coach after the defeat.

New Delhi. India lost the second Test against New Zealand by 113 runs in Pune on Saturday (26 October), giving the visiting team a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. With this, India’s streak of winning 18 consecutive Test series at home after losing to England in 2012-13 also ended. Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik believes that the responsibility for the defeat in the Test series against New Zealand rests on the senior Indian players, while former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar believes that it is not right to blame coach Gautam Gambhir.

Karthik told ‘Cricbuzz’, “Yes, why shouldn’t the blame for this (series defeat) be on the senior players? They’ll look at themselves and say, ‘What could we have done better?’ I don’t think they are running away from it. If you can celebrate wins and the fans feel how important they are, then when you lose and you are attacked, I think they should have the courage to face it.”

he/she said, “If you ask each one of them individually what they think about the series, I don’t think they will be able to say anything special about the performance of the entire team and it would be fair to ask them that India What can be improved for the future of Test cricket and Indian Test cricket.”

New head coach Gautam Gambhir has also come under criticism after India’s tactical errors and repeated batting collapses in the two Test matches, but Manjrekar supported the former opening batsman. Manjrekar told ‘ESPNcricinfo’, “I would still say that the coach has the least impact on the team, less than your 11th weakest player. he/she doesn’t set foot on the field, the captain is responsible there.

Manjrekar questioned Rohit’s ‘strange’ decision of sending all-rounder Sundar to bat before in-form Sarfaraz Khan. “Sending Sarfaraz Khan to bat lower down the order and sending Washington Sundar above him/her because he/she is a left-handed batsman, things like this should not happen. This is absolutely strange. This is something that Rohit Sharma needs to be careful about. Thinking about left and right hand combinations in T20. I think they should promote players based on their ability only.
