In which respect did Indian students outperform Chinese students? This ‘feat’ happened for the first time in 15 years

Indian Students in USA: The influence of Indians remains intact in America. Whenever there is talk of the most influential communities here, the Indian community is definitely mentioned in it. From top position jobs to business, Indians are ahead. However, the dominance of Indians has extended beyond the social sector to the education sector. Indians even overtook China in America. You must be wondering in what field India has defeated China by going to America.
In fact, the ‘Open Doors 2024’ report released on Monday states that for the first time since 2009, Indians have overtaken China as the largest group of international students in America. The ‘Open Doors Report’ is published every year by the ‘Institute of International Education’ (IIE), which provides data on international students and scholars studying in America. It tells how many foreign students are studying in America and from which countries they have come here.

How many Indian-Chinese students are studying in America?

According to the report, 3.31 lakh Indian students were studying in the US in 2023-24, which accounted for 29.4% of the 11 lakh international students studying in the country. In the previous academic year this number was 25.4%. In comparison, the number of Chinese students studying in America in 2023-24 was 2.77 lakh. Last year, the share of Chinese students in the total number of foreign students studying in America was 27.4%, but now it has come down to 24.6%.

Which courses are you studying?

According to the report, the number of Indian students doing postgraduation in America is increasing the fastest. Of the total Indians studying in America, 1.96 lakh or 59% were postgraduate students. Their number has increased by 18% compared to last year. There has been an increase of 13% in the number of Indian undergraduate students. Mathematics and Computer Science are two such courses which are most popular among Indian students to study in America.

In 2023-24, 42.9% Indian students were studying these courses, whereas last year this number was 41.2%. There was a time when engineering was very popular, but it is not so now. 24.5% of Indian students studied engineering in 2023-24, while the number was 26.9% in 2022-23 and 29.6% in 2021-22. Indian students also contributed $11.8 billion to the US economy in 2023.
