Oil Cap Scam

The most common oil cap scam on Malaysia’s highways is the oil cap scam. Here, scammers target drivers at parking points or rest stops. A scammer will inform you that your car’s oil cap is missing or loose, after which you immediately ask for help to avoid engine damage. These scammers then try to sell you a replacement cap at a higher price, which can leave you paying a lot of money.

Tow Truck Scam

Tow truck scams are carried out in a very quiet manner. Scammers often patrol the highways and look for vehicles that are stranded on the side of the road for some reason. They then pretend to help and demand more money for towing. Unless you refuse to give them money, these scammers threaten to take your vehicle to a secret location.

Smoking Wheel Scam

In the smoking wheel scam, the scammers alert you by giving double signals to make it look like your car’s wheels are emitting smoke while you’re driving. They claim that this can cause a fire or explosion. As soon as you stop, these scammers demand a hefty amount of money to help you and sometimes even steal your belongings.

Petrol Station or R&R Scam

This is a dangerous scam that happens at petrol pumps and rest areas. The scammers act like they are in a fix and claim they have lost their wallet. They will usually ask to borrow your card to pay a small petrol bill, but as soon as you agree, they swindle thousands of rupees from you.

Brake Oil Scam

When you take a break somewhere while traveling a long distance on the highway, you may be subjected to a brake oil scam. Here the scammers will come to you and say that your car’s brake oil is leaking and it needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

When you go to check your car, you will feel that the brake oil has really leaked, but sometimes this is not the case because these scammers spill some liquid under the car. Instead of helping, these scammers try to extort money from you.
