Relations between India and Maldives have been strained since Muizzu (who is considered pro-China) took over the top post in November last year. Muizzu had won the presidential election last year under the ‘India Out’ campaign and had asked New Delhi to withdraw its military personnel deployed in the archipelago by May this year. Bilateral relations further soured when Maldivian ministers criticized Modi.
However, there has been a change in Muizzu’s anti-India stance. Muizzu has also dismissed those ministers who criticized the Indian Prime Minister. As Maldives grapples with a severe economic recession, India has decided to provide significant budgetary support to the Government of Maldives by extending its treasury bill of US$ 50 million for another year.
