If the switch is turned on, it will rain heavily, if it is turned off, the rain will return! The country will soon see a ‘miracle’, preparations are also underway for weather GPT

New Delhi: It will now be in our hands to ensure that it does not rain during Independence Day celebrations or any other event. We will also have control over the rain drops falling when it is needed. Similarly, rain or hailstorms can be prevented in cities during floods. The country’s meteorologists hope that in the next five years they will have so much expertise that they will not only be able to increase rainfall, but will also be able to prevent rain along with hail and lightning in some areas. The aim of this mission is to make India climate smart and weather ready so that no weather event including cloud burst can be ignored. Along with this, MausamGPT will also be created on the basis of ChatGPT, which will provide weather information to users instantly in different formats.

Mission Mausam of Modi Government

Actually, the country is now getting ready to deal with the changes in the rain pattern due to climate change. Preparations for Mission Mausam will be completed by 2026. After this, its second phase will begin. The Earth Science Ministry of the Narendra Modi government has taken the responsibility of this mission. In the first phase, many types of research will be done on clouds by making cloud chambers. In this, along with the preparation to reduce the rain caused by the clouds, an attempt will be made to send the clouds with more rain towards such areas where there is drought or less rain. Not only this, to improve the forecast, the number of radars in the country will be increased to 100 by 2026.

Currently, there is a network of 39 radars in the country. Under Mission Mausam, this is to be increased to 100 radars by 2026. Orders for 25 radars have been placed and 20 will be placed soon. Along with radars, the network of wind profilers will also be expanded.

Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences

Research on clouds in the cloud chamber

Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. M Ravichandran said that under this a cloud chamber will be built in IIIT Pune. Research will be done on clouds here. Many types of experiments will be done on clouds. According to the official, the base of the cloud will usually be one to one and a half kilometers away from the earth’s surface. But their height can be up to 12 to 13 kilometers. Therefore, under Mission Mausam, the country is being prepared for changes in height. In this, humidity, wind speed and temperature will be assessed. To reduce the density of clouds, efforts will be made to send more rain-bearing clouds towards areas where rainfall is decreasing.

Research will be done on shifting the clouds

The official said that the country is currently receiving normal rainfall during the monsoon season and throughout the year, but its pattern has changed. There is a plan to understand this pattern and deal with it. In its second phase, there will also be preparations to deal with the problem of lightning from clouds. In this, research will be done on shifting the lightning falling from clouds to the ground from cloud to cloud. Currently, a lot of damage is being done in the country due to lightning. In the second phase, research will also be done on dealing with the problem of smog.

Former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Madhavan Rajeevan, told our sister newspaper The Times of India (TOI) that it is a complex process. he/she said, ‘Cloud seeding and cloud modification is a complex process. We have done a lot of experiments with cloud seeding to increase rainfall, but have had limited success. But not much has been done on cloud suppression.’ he/she said that although there is scope for weather modification in India, its science is not well understood and the technology is complex.

The government announced the fund

Rajeevan said, “In my view we should start doing research in weather modification. For this we need investment.” The government has given an initial approval of Rs 2,000 crore over two years for Mission Mausam to build a more robust forecasting system to deal with extreme weather events and the effects of climate change. More funds will be allocated for it later. The key elements of the mission include deployment of next generation radar and satellite systems with advanced sensors and high performing supercomputers, development of improved Earth system models and GIS-based automated decision support systems for real-time data dissemination.

A cloud chamber will be built at IITM Pune where research on clouds will be done. To reduce the density of clouds, efforts will be made to send more rain-bearing clouds towards areas where rainfall is decreasing.

The network will be improved

According to the current secretary Dr. M Ravichandran, many improvements will be made to improve forecasting under Mission Mausam. Currently, there is a network of 39 radars in the country. Under Mission Mausam, it is to be increased to 100 radars by 2026. More than 70 new radars are to be installed. It is a challenge to complete this work in such a short time. Currently, orders for 25 radars have been placed. 20 will be placed soon. Along with radars, the network of wind profilers will also be expanded. However, automatic weather stations will not be installed under Mission Mausam.

India is already experimenting with artificial rain-making techniques, including cloud seeding using aircraft, and has carried out some pilot projects in Maharashtra and elsewhere. This is being done to study the microphysical characteristics of clouds through a research programme called the Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX).

You will get accurate information from MausamGPT

MausamGPT will be launched under Mission Mausam. Through this AI based app, you will be able to get information related to the weather. For example, a person has to go from Delhi to Mumbai and has to take a flight. he/she can know on this app how the weather will be in Mumbai for the next six hours? How is the weather at Delhi airport? Information about the weather not only of the country but also of foreign countries will be available here. At the same time, an easy number will be issued for farmers under this. By dialing it, farmers will be able to get the weather forecast of their area. This information will be available through SMS. So that those who do not have a smart phone can also get this information.

The ‘switch’ has already been applied in these countries

Techniques to prevent and enhance rainfall are already being used in other countries, including the US, Canada, China, Russia and Australia. Cloud seeding is done on a limited basis using aircraft. Some of these countries have worked on cloud seeding projects, called overseeding, aimed at reducing hailstorms to prevent damage to fruit orchards and grain farms.
