‘I regret the breakdown of my first marriage…’ Javed Akhtar’s pain spills out after 40 years

Javed Akhtar recently spoke openly about his/her battle with alcohol addiction. She revealed how her ‘irresponsible attitude’ led to the breakup of her first marriage. The veteran lyricist admitted in an interview to Sapan Verma for YouTube channel that his/her marriage with Honey Irani failed because he/she was once an alcoholic. Jeved Akhtar advised the youth to avoid alcohol addiction. Said, ‘I have wasted a lot of time by drinking. I was an alcoholic. I quit drinking alcohol on 31 July 1991. I think I’ve wasted at least 10 years just drinking. I could have used that time for some other positive and creative work. I would advise the youth that if you drink alcohol, then leave it, because when I look at my life, I have not made any big mistakes in my life without alcohol.

The 79-year-old lyricist further said, ‘I regret the failure of my first marriage. It could have been saved. But it was my irresponsible attitude, my drinking habit… When you are drunk, you take impulsive (without thinking) decisions, you start fighting about certain things, Which is not such a big deal. I have made all these mistakes.

Javed married Shabana for the second time

Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar are children from Javed’s first marriage. That is, his/her and Honey Irani’s children. After this he/she married Shabana Azmi. This marriage took place in 1984. Both of them do not have any children. Nor did he/she adopt any child.
