How will the work of fencing be completed on India-Myanmar border, laborers are not available, know the reason

New Delhi: The Government of India has decided to install fencing on the 1643 km long India-Myanmar border, but many problems are emerging in it. One of these is the biggest problem. That is, laborers are not easily available to install fencing in inaccessible areas. Due to which this work of installing fencing is not gaining momentum. Many organizations in the areas are also appealing to the people not to work for fencing on the India-Myanmar border.

How far does the border area extend?

Security agencies said that in the India-Myanmar border spread over a distance of 1643 km, 520 km area meets Arunachal Pradesh, 510 km Mizoram, 398 km Manipur and 215 km area meets Nagaland. Fencing work is to be done in all these border areas. But the inaccessible roads, mountains and rivers of these areas are also becoming a hindrance in installing fencing here. While it is also true that contractors are available to install fencing, but laborers are not easily available.

Kitchen is in India and bathroom is in Myanmar, if fencing is installed on the border then what will happen to entry up to 16 kilometers without permit?

Why are workers not available?

The main reason for this is that many of the local people oppose this work of installing fencing. Because of this, despite talking about paying double wages for fencing between the two countries, laborers are not able to get it. Apart from this, due to the worsening law and order situation in Manipur, the work of installing fencing in this area has almost come to a halt.

What did the agencies say about the fencing work?

However, the agencies say that the work of installing fencing is going on, but after fencing for 10 kilometers in Moreh, Manipur, how much longer area has fencing been installed? Agency sources are not ready to say anything about this. Whereas in February this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced the installation of Hybrid Surveillance System (HSS) on the India-Myanmar border. There was also talk of building a patrolling track along the border.

Fencing work going on at a snail’s pace

However, sources say that the work of installing fencing and making patrolling track is going on at a snail’s pace. The violence that started last year in Manipur was also said to be an important reason behind fencing. In which it was feared that to spread unrest here, foreign forces are introducing militants and armed groups into India through Myanmar. Besides, in the case of illegal immigrants, there is also an allegation of spreading narco terrorism in the area.

What will happen to FMR if fencing is installed?

If fencing is installed on the India-Myanmar border, then what will happen to the Free Movement Agreement (FMR) signed between the two countries in May 2018. After the fencing is installed, people of both the countries will not be able to move within 16 kilometers from each other’s border. For this they will need a passport or visa. Which doesn’t happen right now. After fencing is installed, this free movement will stop. People living in the border areas of both the countries are strongly opposing this. Because, so many people have their homes, farms, businesses and families in the border area. This is also being said to be a major reason behind the fencing work not picking up pace.
